Why no lobbyist should copy the early Ian Paisley

I am often reminded of my homeland –  Northern Ireland. A good friend asked why I found it easy to work with so many different sides. As a lobbyist, I think it is important to be able to keep up good relations with all sides and indeed even friendships.

Too many  lobbyists and their clients have been inspired by the younger Ian Paisley and opt for mock indignation. They are inspired by the words ‘Never, Never, Never.

I don’t believe that this is a good tactic. If it delivered it would make sense. It does not.

It does rally the loyal troops. It plays to your home gallery and constituents. Yet, it is likely your constituency is too small to win the day or at least the vote.

To those you are trying to persuade, it comes across as at best unhinged or mock theatrics.

Raising voices in private meetings or public events comes across as Ian Paisley’s attack on the Pope John Paul II.

I think that over time, Ian Paisley realised that these tactics did not work. Late in life, he opted for open dialogue and friendship. It was good for Northern Ireland. I think it is good idea.
