Newry – Fishing Subsidiy Capital of the UK

Fishing For Subsidies in Newry

Not many people know this, but I come from Newry, N.Ireland.I am thankful to my parent in that I left the place very soon after birth to be brought up on the less mean streets of Suffolk.

Newry – Famous For many Reasons

Newry is famous, or perhaps infamous, for many things. During the Troubles it was the sort of place you would not visit. I spent many vacations there until the age of 16. I think I know the place fairly well. But, I am a little confused to find out that Newry is second only to Peterhead, Scotland for getting fishing subsidies.

You can see details of the Newry fleet here:

Fishing Subsidy Paradise

Peterhead has over the years got around €14,815,452.71 in subsidies for the fleet. This makes some sense. Peterhead is the capital of the UK’s fishing industry.

Newry is close behind. It has got around €14,335,504.60 in aid. Looking at the spending of taxpayers money, it seems a lot of money has gone into modernisaing and then scrapping boats.

Where Were They Hiding?

The only thing is that I can’t ever remember any fishing boats in Newry. I have seen blown up armoured vehicles,a gun battle, but never as something as extraordinary as a fishing boat.

I have asked my family back in Newry to report sittings. I am curious.
