Italian Presidency Priorities in the Environment

On the afternoon of 23 July the Italian Environment Minister, Gian Luca Galletti, (Italian Minister for the Environment, the Protection of Natural Resources and the Sea), presented his Environmental agenda for the Italian Presidency.

His focus throughout was on  “Green Growth and Jobs”.

First Reading Target

In terms of legislative targets he spoke of taking to the first reading on:

  • Establishment and operation of a market stability reserve for the EU-ETS
  • Reduction of national emissions of certain atmospheric pollutants/NEC-
  • Directive Limitation of emissions of certain pollutants into the air from medium combustion plants
  • Reduction of pollutant emissions from road vehicles/Euro 5 and 6
  • Amending Directives on waste, packaging and packaging waste, landfill of waste, end-of-life vehicles, batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators and on waste electrical and electronic equipment

2nd Reading Targets

  • Reduction of the consumption of plastic bags
  • Indirect land use change/ILUC
